Language cards should be a part of every language teachers activity kit. Our cards are visual, academic, and easy to use. They provide teachers and students with a common base of information that can be exploited quickly with little or no preparation. No formal training on the part of the teacher is necessary, and teachers have a wide range of choices on how to best use the cards with their classes. Students can even use the cards on their own.
The association of the picture and the vocabulary word on a repetitive basis allows for easier recognition and short term retention. Long term integration can be achieved by reinvesting the newly acquired vocabulary in meaningful activities which reflect the students' needs and interests.
Azimuts Language Cards is really an interactive picture dictionary.
Material
This 32 page manual has 120 language cards and suggests more than 20 different learning activities. All 120 language cards display one or more vocabulary words and the visual representation of the word(s). Teachers should not hesitate to make several copies of this deck of cards. Students should be allowed to bring copies home to practice with their family. Copies of the deck, or parts of the deck, could be given as prizes and given to students who want to improve their basic vocabulary and sentence composition skills. The cards can also be enlarged to be used as classroom decorations for passive reinforcement.
Examples
1. Challenge - Here's a game my students like to play. The goal is to be the person with the most cards at the end of the game. Each student receives one card. They hide the word on their card with their thumb and they walk around the classroom showing the picture on their card and challenging one other student at a time to tell them how to say the word in English. They must say, "I challenge you. Can you tell me what this is?" If the other student is able to identify the picture in English, the first student must give him his card. If the second student is unable to identify the picture, he does not win the card. The students then change roles. The second student gives the first student an opportunity to win a card. After, they will both go challenge other students.
When the students have no more cards, they go pick another card off the deck and join in the game again.
The game last about 5 minutes. Once we have declared a winner, we can start again, or go on with other activities.
2. Mimes - I like to leave this deck of cards on the corner of my desk. When I finish an activity with my students and I have only five or six minutes left before the bell rings, I like to have students choose a card and mime the card for the other students. This is great fun.
Tip
The cards can be glued onto sheets of cardboard before being cut out. They will last longer if they are laminated.
