Language cards should be a part of every language teachers activity kit. Our cards are visual, academic, and easy to use. They provide teachers and students with a common base of information that can be exploited quickly with little or no preparation. No formal training on the part of the teacher is necessary, and teachers have a wide range of choices on how to best use the cards with their classes. Students can even use the cards on their own.

The association of the picture and the vocabulary word on a repetitive basis allows for easier recognition and short term retention. Long term integration can be achieved by reinvesting the newly acquired vocabulary in meaningful activities which reflect the students' needs and interests.

Azimuts Language Cards is really an interactive picture dictionary.

Material

This 32 page manual has 120 language cards and suggests more than 20 different learning activities. All 120 language cards display a verb and the visual representation of the verb. Teachers should not hesitate to make several copies of this deck of cards. Students should be allowed to bring copies home to practice with their family. Copies of the deck, or parts of the deck, could be given as prizes and given to students who want to improve their basic vocabulary and sentence composition skills. The cards can also be enlarged to be used as classroom decorations for passive reinforcement.

Examples

1. Collective Stories - Divide the class into two groups. Tell them they are going to create a collective story. Alternating from one group to the other, ask one student to come to the front of the room and choose a card from the deck. The student should try to contribut to the collective story by creating a sentence using the verb on his card. The student receives one point for his team if he can successfully add a sentence to the story.

2. Word Chains - Everyone receives one card. At the teacher's signal, the students try to link their cards to the cards of the other students. The last letter of a word written on a card can be linked to the first letter of a word written on another card ( provided they are the same ).
For example: bananas shoulder rice eraser

The students who make the longest word chain win.

Tip

The cards can be glued onto sheets of cardboard before being cut out. They will last longer if they are laminated.
