Bryansk Highschool - Russia
We, the students of Gymnasia No.2 Ann Panova, Kirill Korotky, Darina Shilina and Nathalie Golavach would like to tell you about where we live. Over a thousand years ago, Bryansk was founded on the banks of the Desna river amidst forests. That's why at first it was called Debryansk ( from the russian word "debry" which means thick forests ).
Now it is a big town in the European part of Russia not far from Moscow. It takes 6 hours by train to get there. The population of our town is about half a million people. It is an industrial, educational and cultural center of a big region. There are lots of plants and factories here which produce various goods from heavy trucks to mineral water and ice cream. The mayor of Bryansk is Ivan Tarusov. Bryansk is very green. We have many parks and squares, the streets are lined with trees. There are no skyscrapers in our town, the tallest buildings have 12 or 14 floors. In Bransk thewre are three theaters and several amateur groups, three universities and a small number of colleges, 70 schools. There are also two stadiums and swimming pools. In our town, you'll find very beautiful churches too. Most of them are in the center.
People in Bryansk are kind and hospitable. We all speak Russian, but in schools children study English, German and French. Summers are usually warm, and on weekends people go to the country, to the river or to the forest. Winters are not always cold. But if it is coldand there is a lot of snow, grown-ups and children go skiing, skating and play hockey.
Bryansk has an interesting history. It is the town of partisan glory and in the town and the region there are hundreds of monuments and memorials to those who defended Motherland and our native place from facists. The most impressive monument stands in Partisan Square and people bring flowers there on memory days. Bryansk is beautiful, we love it and are proud of it.
