Annabelle Bigno, an English teacher at Muscat's French school in Oman, has sent us a number of texts and photos about Muscat and about life in Oman in general, written by pupils in 6e, 5e, 4e and 3e. She says that they would be delighted to receive information about schools in Quebec, Canada. Muscat, the capital. Muscat is the capital of the Sultanate of Oman. This is where the main political and economical activities take place. Here there are three main sorts of people: the Asians (Indian, Pakistanis and Philippines) who represent a big part of the population, the Omanis and the expatriates. In all, there are about 1.5 million inhabitants in Muscat so this is a small city, but quite rich in culture and amenities like tennis courts, swimming pools, museums, mosques etc. For diving freaks, Muscat is a great place. There are several diving clubs, and the place is magnificent. Muscat has a port, which can receive ferries and many tankers from the refinery and container ships. What surprises tourists the most are the mountains and the sea, both very close to one another. Muscat is a unique place! Benjamin Faucon ![]() HELLO How are you? My name is Mallory and I'm twelve years old. I'll tell you what we have to do in my school. We begin school every day at eight o'clock and we finish at half past one. On the Wednesday we finish at twelve o'clock. At school we must bring a refrigerated lunch box during the breaks because it's a non-stop day : we have to eat at school. There are not a lot of pupils here. In my class there are only three of us. In secondary school, there are fourteen pupils and in primary there are about seventy children. We have a football pitch, a volley-ball pitch and a basket-ball pitch. At school every year the pupils' parents organize a school fair for all the children. There are a lot of games and activities and we can eat and drink. We can win a lot of presents, big and small. There is a big raffle with very nice gifts. I like my school because there is a nice atmosphere and I feel like I'm in a big family. MALLORY MUSCAT Muscat is the capital of Oman. You can do a lot of sports (tennis, swimming, ice skating…) You can also visit museums like the French/Omani museum, which is very interesting. There you can see traditional Omanis wearing jewellery which is lovely and original. You can also learn about the history of Oman and France. Muscat is very popular in the Gulf because it's one of the cleanest cities. It has got a lot of regions: Al Kuhwair, Ruwi, Al Qurum, Mutrah and Seeb. In Al Qurum, there are a lot of shops, restaurants and parks. In Mutrah, you can find jewellery, the port and other souvenirs. In Seeb, there is the airport. In Muscat the beach is very nice and you can play volleyball and football. But the most popular sport practised is diving, because of the different varieties of fish. Myriam Bouzerar. ![]() Sun, Sand, Beaches Oman is placed next to Saudi Arabia on the Gulf. It is a very hot country but you can do a lot of trips. You can go camping in the Wahiba Sands. It's a huge desert on the sea side (see attached pictures.) There are wadis like Wadi Shaab - that's one of my favourites because you have to walk for about an hour, then you need to swim to a big stone block which is hollow. Then you have to pass your head through a small hole in the wall where you find a big pool and a waterfall. Then there are nice beaches like Sifah and the beaches on Masirah island. It's a very nice country !!!!! Daniel Pieffer -Possible excursions in Oman- In Oman, one can organise many excursions, generally in winter, as climate is very hot in summer. The most famous ones are the wadis and isolated beaches near the sea (for example Sifa), camping or desert trecking in dunes (for example the Wahibas) and in the mountains (the Seik plateau). If you walk in a wadi in the mountains, you have to be careful when it rains because the water level rises very fast and floods can be dangerous. Swimming in wadis is very nice after a long walk. In winter, we can go to the sand dunes because the climate is ideal at that time of the year. Sometimes we can observe small tornadoes in the Wahibas, which are dunes. Wherever you are, you will almost always see nomads. Going to the sea is possible at any time of the year although the sea can be quite cool in winter : it is one of our favourite destinations because it the closest to Muscat and in the sea we refresh ourselves in the water. In summer we can only go to the mountains and to the sea because the dunes get really hot. The mountains are up to 2000 metres high and are still cool. Cedric Le Varlet The Sultanate of Oman Oman is located in the east of the Gulf. It is 312.500 square km. It doesn't have a big population. The capital is Muscat, which extends from Seeb town on the north to Quriyat village in the south. In Muscat there are many commercial centers, industrial areas and big hotels... Muscat is the most populated and developed town in Oman. The official language is Arabic, however they use English too. They follow the Islamic faith. Oman possesses a rich variety of mountains and plains. Its climate is very hot, especially in summer but in winter, the weather is very pleasant. Mohammed DEAR FRIENDS Hi, everybody!
